Halal Food: No Choice in Australia

WHERE’S THE PORK? None here we’re Halal.

Not what you expect at the local Chinese restaurant is it?

Last week on another visit to Brisbane, Queensland’s capital city I went into my favourite Chinese take away restaurant.

I noticed that there was no pork but didn’t think much of because they were still putting out the freshly cooked dishes.

I happened to glance over at a menu on the counter and saw the words HALAL FOOD written at the bottom.

That’s when I realised there was no pork because it was all HALAL.

I don’t eat halal by choice and that’s my right just as it is the choice of Jews to eat kosher and Muslims to eat halal and vegetarians no meat if THEY CHOOSE but what I object to is eating halal and not knowing it is halal.

I understand that business’ choose what they sell and who they sell to but in that case those who CHOOSE not to eat halal should be made aware by IN YOUR FACE SIGNAGE before entering the premises.

My choice was taken away. I felt duped.

What really angered me though was the attitude of the woman after my complaint.

She said “this is a halal restaurant” AS IF SHE EXPECTED ME TO KNOW WHAT ‘HALAL’ IS AND JUST ACCEPT IT.
